Brand-wide ownership notes

Audi of this era is a VW Group parts bin in a nicer suit. That is mostly good news — parts are cheap and plentiful, and independent specialists are everywhere — but it means the known VW Group failure modes apply: the EA888 petrol chain tensioner and oil consumption, common-rail diesel emissions hardware, and the multitronic CVT. The quattro cars are notably more expensive to keep than the front-drivers, and the CVT is the single biggest financial risk in the range.

Chassis

ChassisBodyYearsCharacter
B8sedan2008–2015The sensible one of the segment — quieter and better built inside than an E90, less interesting to drive, and carrying two expensive risks the BMW does not: the early 2.0 TFSI's oil consumption and the multitronic CVT.
B8 Avantwagon2008–2016The body most B8s were sold in outside the UK, and the one worth buying — the estate costs little more than the saloon, loses nothing dynamically, and holds value slightly better.
8Phatchback2003–2013The three-door, launched first in 2003 — the tidiest-looking 8P and the one that established the car as a premium Golf.
8PAhatchback2004–2013The five-door on a slightly longer wheelbase — the version most 8Ps were sold in, and the one to buy for the extra usability at no real penalty.
8P7convertible2008–2013A cloth-roofed cabriolet launched with the 2008 facelift — later, rarer and softer than the hatches, and only ever sold in facelift specification.
