Car Model Guide/ Engines/ M1DA

M1DA 1.0 EcoBoost

A three-cylinder turbo that is far better to drive than the capacity suggests, with real torque low down. And early examples had a coolant problem that could crack the cylinder head, so the history and any recall work are the whole purchase.

Engine and component issues

Coolant loss and cylinder head cracking (early 1.0)M1DA 1.0 EcoBoost€1,500–€4,000
Coolant vanishing without a visible leak, the temperature gauge moving under load, and at worst overheating and head damage. Early engines used a coolant hose and thermostat arrangement that could fail and let the engine overheat, and a cracked cylinder head is the worst outcome. Ford addressed it with updated parts and service actions, so which parts are fitted matters more than the mileage.
Check: Check the coolant level and look for residue in the expansion tank, then ask directly whether the coolant recall or upgrade work has been carried out on this car.
Later parts: Updated coolant hose and thermostat parts under Ford service actions

Carbon buildup on intake valvesdirect injection€400–€700
Rough cold idle, slow throttle response, misfires, gradual loss of low-end response. Direct injection puts no fuel over the intake valves, so crankcase vapour deposits bake on undisturbed.
Check: Not visible without a borescope. Treat it as a service item that's due unless there's a receipt. It's not a fault, it's an unbudgeted maintenance cost.
