Crankshaft pulley and damper failure
Attaches to AJD-V6 at engine level · Engine · carried by 2 variants across 2 chassis
Overview
Crankshaft pulley and damper failure is a occasional fault recorded against AJD-V6 at engine level, typically from 120–220k km. It shows up as a knock or rumble from the front of the engine, a wobbling pulley, and belt squeal or a lost belt once it separates. Where it's documented, the repair runs €450–€1,200 (pulley and belt at a specialist, more if the front cover is damaged, costs dated 2026-07), and it can be checked before you buy. 2 variants across 2 chassis in this database inherit it.
What happens
Symptom. A knock or rumble from the front of the engine, a wobbling pulley, and belt squeal or a lost belt once it separates.
Cause. The pulley is a bonded damper and its rubber layer degrades, letting the outer ring move on the hub. If it comes apart it takes the belt and can damage the front of the engine.
How to check it
Static checks
With the engine running, look at the crankshaft pulley for any wobble in the outer ring. It's a five-minute check and it's the one Jaguar-specific item on this engine.
Engine off, ideally on a lift.
Every variant that carries this
| Variant | Chassis | Body | Years | Risk | Good buy | Cost as % of good buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3.0 D AJD-V6 | X250 | sedan | 2009–2015 | R3 | €8,500 | 10% |
| 3.0 D AJD-V6 | X250 Sportbrake | wagon | 2012–2015 | R3 | €9,200 | 9% |
The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
