Haldex coupling pump failure

Attaches to C394 at chassis level · Drivetrain · carried by 2 variants across 1 chassis

Overview

Haldex coupling pump failure is a common fault recorded against C394 at chassis level, typically from 80–160k km. It shows up as four-wheel drive that no longer engages, a warning light, or the front wheels spinning on a wet junction when the rear should be helping. Where it's documented, the repair runs €150–€1,300 (oil and filter at the cheap end, a pump or coupling at the dear end, costs dated 2026-09), and it can be partly checked before you buy. 2 variants across 1 chassis in this database inherit it.

What happens

Symptom. Four-wheel drive that no longer engages, a warning light, or the front wheels spinning on a wet junction when the rear should be helping.

Cause. The Haldex coupling depends on clean oil and a small filter, and the service is short and cheap and widely skipped. Debris then blocks the filter and the pump fails, leaving the car front-drive.

How to check it

Paperwork

Ask when the Haldex oil and filter were last changed and get the date in writing. On the test drive, pull away briskly from a standstill on a loose or wet surface and feel whether the rear takes up any drive.

On these cars the folder is most of the value.

The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
