Car Model Guide/ Issues/ Timing chain tensioner failure

Timing chain tensioner failure

Attaches to CAXC at engine level · Engine · carried by 3 variants across 3 chassis

Overview

Timing chain tensioner failure is a common fault recorded against CAXC at engine level, typically from 80–160k km. It shows up as a loud rattle for a second or two on cold start; in the worst case the chain skips timing and the engine runs rough or is damaged. Where it's documented, the repair runs €600–€1,200 (updated tensioner and chain kit at an independent, costs dated 2026-07), and it can be partly checked before you buy. 3 variants across 3 chassis in this database inherit it.

What happens

Symptom. A loud rattle for a second or two on cold start; in the worst case the chain skips timing and the engine runs rough or is damaged.

Cause. The early spring-loaded chain tensioner on the EA111 1.4 can lose tension when oil pressure drops after the car stands, letting the chain jump a tooth on the next cold start. Low oil level makes it worse.

Later parts. Updated tensioner design fitted from later production

How to check it

Cold start

Start from stone cold and listen for a rattle; ask whether the updated tensioner has been fitted, and have the cam-crank correlation scanned.

You get one. If the engine is warm when you arrive, come back another day.

The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
