Excessive oil consumption (piston rings)

Attaches to CDAA at engine level · Engine · carried by 10 variants across 10 chassis

Overview

Excessive oil consumption (piston rings) is a common fault recorded against CDAA at engine level, typically from 60–150k km. It shows up as regular oil top-ups between services, low-oil warnings, oil-fouled plugs and occasional light blue smoke. Where it's documented, the repair runs €150–€4,000 (€150 for a breather; a short-block rebuild if the rings have gone, costs dated 2026-07), and it can be partly checked before you buy. 10 variants across 10 chassis in this database inherit it.

What happens

Symptom. Regular oil top-ups between services, low-oil warnings, oil-fouled plugs and occasional light blue smoke.

Cause. Low-tension oil-control rings with small drain-back holes coke up and let oil past the pistons, where it burns. A tired crankcase breather can add to it.

Later parts. Revised pistons and rings on later EA888 production

How to check it

Paperwork

Ask the owner's top-up interval, inspect the oil level and the spark-plug colour, and watch for smoke on hard acceleration and over-run.

On these cars the folder is most of the value.

The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
