MultiAir actuator unit failure
Attaches to 940A2 at engine level · Engine · carried by 1 variants across 1 chassis
Overview
MultiAir actuator unit failure is a occasional fault recorded against 940A2 at engine level, typically from 90–170k km. It shows up as a rough idle, a warning light, reduced power and in some cases a misfire that comes and goes with engine temperature. Where it's documented, the repair runs €900–€1,800 (complete MultiAir assembly and gaskets at an independent, costs dated 2026-07), and it can be partly checked before you buy. 1 variants across 1 chassis in this database inherit it.
What happens
Symptom. A rough idle, a warning light, reduced power and in some cases a misfire that comes and goes with engine temperature.
Cause. The hydraulic valve-lift unit sits on top of the cylinder head and replaces the intake camshaft. Its solenoids and seals fail with age and poor oil, and the unit is supplied as a complete assembly rather than in parts.
How to check it
On the drive
Drive the car hard enough to load the engine, since faults here often show under load rather than at idle. Ask for oil receipts and check that the correct grade has been used.
Include low-speed manoeuvring, not just an open road.
Every variant that carries this
| Variant | Chassis | Body | Years | Risk | Good buy | Cost as % of good buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4 MultiAir 940A2 | 940 | hatchback | 2010–2020 | R3 | €5,500 | 25% |
The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
