Sensotronic brake unit failure (pre-facelift)
Attaches to W211-FAMILY at chassis level · Brakes · carried by 8 variants across 2 chassis
Overview
Sensotronic brake unit failure (pre-facelift) is a common fault recorded against W211-FAMILY at chassis level, typically from 100–200k km. It shows up as a red brake warning, a message telling you to stop, a much harder pedal, and in some cases the car limiting itself. Where it's documented, the repair runs €1,200–€2,500 (SBC unit replacement and coding at a specialist, costs dated 2026-07), and it can be partly checked before you buy. 8 variants across 2 chassis in this database inherit it.
What happens
Symptom. A red brake warning, a message telling you to stop, a much harder pedal, and in some cases the car limiting itself.
Cause. The electro-hydraulic Sensotronic unit has a pump and accumulator with a counted service life, and once the counter expires the system demands replacement. Mercedes dropped the system at the 2006 facelift, so later cars aren't affected.
Later parts. Conventional hydraulic brakes from the 2006 facelift
Sources. Mercedes-Benz service campaigns covering the SBC unit
How to check it
OBD scan
Establish the build date first, since facelift cars don't have it. On an earlier car, have the SBC counter read on a diagnostic and treat a high count as a bill you're about to inherit.
Mandatory. A seller who refuses a scan has answered the question.

The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
