2.0 4B11

A conventional port-injected four with a timing chain and no turbocharger. It's unhurried in a car this heavy and there's nothing expensive recorded against it, which is the trade.

Overview

The 2.0 is the 4B11 petrol version of the Mitsubishi Outlander SUV (GF), sold 2012–2018 with 150 PS and cvt. Demands diligence at level 3. The CVT is the largest single bill on the car and its fluid changes are widely skipped. 2 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost

Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.

CVT fluid degradation and belt wearJatco CVT€1,400–€3,200
Hesitation as the car pulls away, engine flare with no matching acceleration, a shudder at low speed, and eventually a warning light and limp mode. The belt and pulleys depend entirely on the fluid, and the fluid degrades with heat. Owners skip the changes because the service schedules downplay them, and by the time the symptoms arrive the belt has usually worn.
Check: Drive from cold in slow traffic and feel for shudder, hesitation or flare. Then ask for the fluid-change record, and treat a car with none as carrying the full cost.
TransmissioncommonPartly detectableevidence: documented90180k km
Boot and tailgate water ingressGF body€100–€500
Damp carpet in the boot, condensation inside the rear lights and a musty smell in the back of the car. The tailgate seals and the rear light gaskets let water past, and it collects under the boot floor where nobody looks. On a seven-seat car the third row sits right in it.
Check: Lift the boot floor and feel underneath, then look inside the rear light units for moisture. Fold the third row down and check the carpet in the wells.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

CVT health tracks fluid history rather than distance, so ask for the record before you weigh the odometer. A 200,000 km car with documented changes is safer than a 100,000 km one without.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 4B11 is a plain port-injected four with a chain and no turbocharger, so the engine itself asks for very little. What decides this car is the Jatco CVT bolted behind it, since fluid changes get skipped and the failure is expensive. Drive it from cold and feel for hesitation, flare or a shudder as it takes up drive. So get the fluid history in writing, because that document is worth more than any other check you can make here.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
