940A2 1.4 MultiAir

A turbocharged 1.4 with hydraulic variable valve lift in place of an intake camshaft, which is clever and works well. The MultiAir actuator on top of the head is the part that fails, and it's replaced as an assembly.

Engine and component issues

MultiAir actuator unit failure940A2 1.4 MultiAir€900–€1,800
A rough idle, a warning light, reduced power and in some cases a misfire that comes and goes with engine temperature. The hydraulic valve-lift unit sits on top of the cylinder head and replaces the intake camshaft. Its solenoids and seals fail with age and poor oil, and the unit is supplied as a complete assembly rather than in parts.
Check: Drive the car hard enough to load the engine, since faults here often show under load rather than at idle. Ask for oil receipts and check that the correct grade has been used.
