Shuddering as the car pulls away, jerky low-speed shifts, and a warning or a refusal to select a gear in later stages. The dry dual-clutch unit fitted to automatic cars wears its clutch pack and its control module, and both were the subject of extended warranty and service programmes. Manual cars are unaffected, so this only matters if the car in front of you is an automatic.

Check: On an automatic, drive slowly through a car park feeling for shudder as it takes up drive, then ask what clutch or module work has been done. On a manual there's nothing here to check.
