Overview

Water pump and thermostat housing leak is a common fault recorded against vw-coolant-pump-housing at component level, typically from 90–180k km. It shows up as coolant disappearing with no puddle underneath, a crusty residue around the front of the engine, and eventually a low-coolant warning. Where it's documented, the repair runs €400–€800 (pump and housing at an independent, more on the diesels where the belt comes off, costs dated 2026-07), and it can be checked before you buy. 29 variants across 9 chassis in this database inherit it.

What happens

Symptom. Coolant disappearing with no puddle underneath, a crusty residue around the front of the engine, and eventually a low-coolant warning.

Cause. The water pump and thermostat housing on this engine family are a plastic assembly that weeps as it ages. It's a wear item rather than a defect, and because the pump is driven off the timing belt on the diesels the labour is more than the part suggests.

How to check it

Static checks

Look for dried coolant staining around the front of the engine and check the expansion tank level against its marks. Ask whether it has been done, because most cars of this age have either had it or are due.

Engine off, ideally on a lift.

The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
