The GTI engine, EA888 gen-3 with both direct and port injection, which keeps the valves far cleaner than the gen-2 managed. It's strong and tuneable, and the water pump and thermostat housing remain the routine leak.

Coolant disappearing with no puddle underneath, a crusty residue around the front of the engine, and eventually a low-coolant warning. The water pump and thermostat housing on this engine family are a plastic assembly that weeps as it ages. It's a wear item rather than a defect, and because the pump is driven off the timing belt on the diesels the labour is more than the part suggests.
Check: Look for dried coolant staining around the front of the engine and check the expansion tank level against its marks. Ask whether it has been done, because most cars of this age have either had it or are due.

The Cupra takes the GTI's gen-3 EA888 and turns it up, adds a limited-slip differential on many cars and undercuts the Volkswagen substantially. As a driving proposition it is superb and it remains usable every day. The risk is ownership rather than engineering, because these get mapped and tracked more than most. So buy the standard one with a thick folder and treat a cheap modified example as a project rather than a bargain.
