What happens

Symptom. Burning oil smell after a drive, oil residue down the exhaust side of the block, occasionally smoke from the bay.

Cause. The gasket hardens with heat cycles. Standard age-related failure rather than a design fault.

How to check it

Static checks

Look along the exhaust side of the head for wet oil and baked residue on the manifold heat shield.

Engine off, ideally on a lift.

The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
