Rear differential fluid neglect
Attaches to RE at chassis level · Drivetrain · carried by 2 variants across 1 chassis
Overview
Rear differential fluid neglect is a common fault recorded against RE at chassis level, typically from 60–150k km. It shows up as a groan, shudder or judder from the rear on tight low-speed turns, most noticeable in car parks and on cold mornings. Where it's documented, the repair runs €80–€900 (a fluid change at the cheap end, differential clutch work at the dear end, costs dated 2026-09), and it can be checked before you buy. 2 variants across 1 chassis in this database inherit it.
What happens
Symptom. A groan, shudder or judder from the rear on tight low-speed turns, most noticeable in car parks and on cold mornings.
Cause. Honda's four-wheel-drive system uses a dual-pump rear differential with its own specific fluid. The fluid degrades and the clutches inside begin to judder, and the change is often skipped because it isn't on every service schedule.
How to check it
On the drive
Drive slowly around a tight car park turn in both directions and listen for groaning or feel for shudder from the rear. Ask when the differential fluid was last changed.
Include low-speed manoeuvring, not just an open road.
Every variant that carries this
| Variant | Chassis | Body | Years | Risk | Good buy | Cost as % of good buy |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2.0 i-VTEC R20A | RE | SUV | 2007–2012 | R2 | €7,000 | 7% |
| 2.2 i-DTEC N22B | RE | SUV | 2010–2012 | R4 | €10,650 | 5% |
The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
