2.0 MZR20

A plain chain-driven petrol four with nothing clever about it, which is the point. No turbo and no direct injection means none of the bills that define the diesels in this range.

Overview

The 2.0 is the MZR20 petrol version of the Mazda 3 hatchback (BL), sold 2009–2013 with 151 PS and manual or automatic. Manageable at level 2. A simple chain-driven petrol with nothing expensive of its own, so corrosion is what ends these cars. 0 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

    Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

    Our read, not a record
The 2.0 MZR gives the Mazda 3 real pace and shares the larger car's mechanical simplicity: chain-driven, port-injected and free of the diesel's filter trouble. It's genuinely good to drive, sharper than a Golf of the same age. What will end it is corrosion around the arches and sills, exactly as with the 6. So put it on a ramp first and buy the clean one, because the engine is the part least likely to let you down.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
