Mazda 6 Hatch, GH

The keen driver's choice in a dull class, let down by a body that rusts earlier than a Japanese car should and by a pair of difficult diesels.

Overview

The GH is the hatchback Mazda 6, built 2007–2012 and facelifted in 2010. 4 standard engines are documented here, each with its own issue list, inspection sequence and price band. Asking prices across the standard range run €800–€4,300, and 2 of the 4 carry a risk level of 4 or 5; the facelift cars sit at a premium over otherwise identical pre-facelift ones. The cheapest way in is the 2.0 MZR-CD RF7J from €1,150, while the 2.0 MZR20 is the lowest-risk engine at €1,450, so which engine you buy matters more here than which year. Prices are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology.

Rating map, price against risk

Good-buy price plotted against risk level for every standard engine, so the value corner is visible at a glance.

Every standard engine in the chassis, plotted at its good-buy price against its risk level. Cheap and low-risk is the top-left; expensive and fragile is the bottom-right. M cars are excluded, they would stretch the price axis and tell you nothing about the rest.

Chassis-wide issues, every engine inherits these

Faults recorded against the bodyshell and running gear rather than one engine, so every variant on this page inherits them.

Bubbling paint along the rear arches and sills, and scaling or perforation in the boot floor and around the rear suspension mounts. This generation's corrosion protection doesn't match the reputation the make carries, and cars in salted climates suffer early. It's the fault that ends these cars, because the mechanicals usually outlast the body.
Check: Put it on a ramp and look at the arches, the sills and the boot floor in good light before you look at anything else. Walk away from perforation rather than negotiating on it.

Buying summary

Our read on the chassis, built on the records above rather than added to them.

Buy the petrol. The 2.0 and 2.5 MZR are simple, chain-driven and durable, and they avoid everything that goes wrong with the diesels. Avoid the 2.0 MZR-CD, which had such poor particulate-filter behaviour and injector-seal trouble that Mazda replaced it mid-generation. The 2.2 is better but not clean, with injector and timing-chain wear on its record. Check the arches and sills on every car, because corrosion is the fault that ends these.
