1.2 16V D4F

Renault's small port-injected petrol, belt-driven and undemanding. It's slow, it's cheap to fix anywhere in Europe, and the cambelt interval is the one thing you cannot let slide.

Overview

The 1.2 16V is the D4F petrol version of the Renault Clio hatchback (X85), sold 2005–2014 with 75 PS and manual_5. Manageable at level 2. A cambelt is the only scheduled engine expense, and skipping it is terminal. 1 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost

Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.

Window motors that stop working, a central locking that misses a door, dashboard warning lights that come and go, and failing exterior bulb circuits. The connectors and small motors age, and damp in the doors and tailgate accelerates it. Almost none of it is expensive on its own, and it adds up on a car worth this little.
Check: Work every window, mirror, light and lock during the viewing rather than sampling a few. A seller who has stopped fixing small faults is telling you how the car has been kept.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

There's no filter and no high-pressure fuel system, so condition and belt history are what matter. A 160,000 km car with a receipt for the belt is a better buy than a lower-mileage mystery.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Good buy isn't the same as cheapest. The good-buy figure assumes the known failure items are either done with receipts or verifiably not yet due. Full breakdown by facelift phase →

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 1.2 is slow and it suits a Clio's soft ride better than the numbers suggest, as long as your driving is mostly local. The cambelt is the item you cannot let slide, since a failure bends valves and writes off the engine on a car worth very little. Ask for the receipt rather than the stamp. So check the electric windows, the central locking and the dashboard warning lights, because those are the common complaints on these.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
