1.6 16V K4M

Renault's long-serving port-injected 1.6. It's slow, simple and belt-driven, so the cambelt schedule is the one thing you cannot skip.

Overview

The 1.6 16V is the K4M petrol version of the Renault Mégane hatchback (III), sold 2008–2016 with 110 PS and manual_5. Manageable at level 2. A simple belt-driven petrol with no expensive failure of its own, so the cambelt schedule is the thing that matters. 1 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost

Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.

The car failing to recognise the key card, a no-start with the dashboard lit, or an intermittent immobiliser warning. The card reader and the ignition electronics wear, and the cards themselves fail with age. It's rarely expensive to put right, but it strands the car when it happens, which is what gives it its reputation.
Check: Start the car several times with both cards if two exist, and treat a seller who can only produce one working card as telling you something.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 1.6 K4M is Renault's long-serving port-injected four and it removes every diesel worry from a Mégane, with no injectors to wash a bore and no filter to block. It's slow and a little thirsty for the performance. Because it's belt-driven rather than chained, the cambelt schedule is not optional and an overrun is terminal. So buy on belt history, scan the electronics as you would on any Renault of this era, and it's very cheap transport.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
