2.0t B207

Saab's turbocharged four, port-injected and relaxed rather than sharp. It responds well to being looked after and it's cheap to run on gas in the markets where that's normal.

Overview

The 2.0t is the B207 petrol version of the Saab 9-3 sedan (9440), sold 2002–2012 with 175 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. Oil sludge on neglected examples and the same M32 gearbox weakness as the diesel. 2 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Oil sludge and oil pickup blockageB207 2.0t€800–€3,500
An oil pressure warning, a rattle from the top end at start-up and, once the pickup is blocked, bearing failure. Stretched oil changes let deposits build in the sump and block the oil pickup screen, which starves the bearings and the turbo. It's entirely a maintenance failure, which is why the receipts matter more than the mileage.
Check: Look under the oil filler cap for deposits and read the service history for interval length rather than for stamps. A car with a documented 10,000 km habit is a different proposition to one on 30,000 km intervals.

M32 gearbox bearing failureGM/Fiat M32 six-speed manual€700–€1,600
A rumble or whine that changes as you select different gears, worst in fifth and sixth, and eventually a whine under load in every gear. The M32 runs a small oil volume and its end bearings wear, which lets the shafts move and destroys the gear teeth. The factory never scheduled an oil change, so most of these have run their whole lives on the original fill.
Check: Drive at a steady speed in each gear with the window down and listen for a rumble that changes pitch with the gear rather than with road speed. Ask when the gearbox oil was last changed, because most owners have never done it.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

Service history outranks mileage here by a wide margin, since sludge builds on stretched intervals rather than on distance. A documented car at 250,000 km is a better bet than a mystery one at half that.

🇺🇸 United StatesNot sold2.0t B207 was never a US-market car
What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The B207 is relaxed rather than sharp, and it suits the way a 9-3 covers ground. Oil quality is the whole story, because the turbo and the oil pickup both suffer when changes are stretched, and the resulting sludge ends engines. Ask for receipts and look at the oil filler cap for deposits. So listen to the gearbox on a test drive, since the M32 is fitted here as well and it fails the same way.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
