Škoda Superb Hatch, 3T

A Passat with limousine rear legroom and a boot lid that opens two ways, sold for less than the Volkswagen it shares everything with.

Overview

The 3T is the hatchback Škoda Superb, built 2008–2015 and facelifted in 2013. 4 standard engines are documented here, each with its own issue list, inspection sequence and price band. Asking prices across the standard range run €2,550–€9,250, and 1 of the 4 carry a risk level of 4 or 5; the facelift cars sit at a premium over otherwise identical pre-facelift ones. The 1.6 TDI CAYC is both the cheapest way in, from €3,350, and the lowest-risk engine of the range, which makes it the obvious starting point. Prices are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology.

What changed at the 2013 facelift
New nose, lights and interior trim; Revised common-rail diesels and a wider DSG offering. The engine changes are the ones that matter, a car built in the changeover year can carry either engine, so check the engine code on the block rather than the registration date.

4 variants from the facelift on, carrying a real market premium of roughly 9% over an otherwise identical pre-facelift car. Variants appearing in both tables were sold either side of the changeover, the build month decides which one you're looking at, not the model year.

Rating map, price against risk

Good-buy price plotted against risk level for every standard engine, so the value corner is visible at a glance.

Every standard engine in the chassis, plotted at its good-buy price against its risk level. Cheap and low-risk is the top-left; expensive and fragile is the bottom-right. M cars are excluded, they would stretch the price axis and tell you nothing about the rest.

Chassis-wide issues, every engine inherits these

Faults recorded against the bodyshell and running gear rather than one engine, so every variant on this page inherits them.

Twin-opening tailgate mechanism faultsSuperb platform€200–€600
The tailgate refusing to switch between hatch and boot modes, sticking in one mode, or a rattle from the mechanism. The twin-opening tailgate carries a mechanism no other car in the group has, and its linkage and actuator wear. It's a nuisance rather than a serious fault, though parts are specific to this car.
Check: Open the tailgate in both modes several times, listening for the mechanism switching cleanly, and check the boot seal for damp.

Buying summary

Our read on the chassis, built on the records above rather than added to them.

Best value: 2.0 TDI common-rail, on the usual condition that the oil-pump balance-shaft drive has been dealt with or documented. Best petrol: 1.8 TFSI, provided the chain tensioner is done and it holds its oil. The gearbox is the other decision, because the dry-clutch DSG is the weak one and a manual removes the question. Then check the twin-opening tailgate mechanism, since it's the one part of this car with no equivalent on a Passat.
