1.6 Valvematic 1ZR-FAE

A port-injected chain-driven four with Toyota's Valvematic variable lift. There's no turbo, no high-pressure fuel pump and no particulate filter, which is why almost nothing goes wrong with it. It's slow, and that's the only real criticism.

Overview

The 1.6 Valvematic is the 1ZR-FAE petrol version of the Toyota Avensis wagon (T27 Tourer), sold 2009–2018 with 132 PS and manual_6. Low risk at level 1. No turbo, no high-pressure fuel pump and no particulate filter, so there's no expensive failure mode recorded against it. 1 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Very little recorded against the bodyAvensis platform€150–€400
Nothing widespread. Ordinary wear on the suspension and interior of a car that often worked as a fleet vehicle. This generation has no endemic body or electrical fault of the kind that defines its European rivals. What turns up is ordinary age and use, which is why the engine choice matters more here than the chassis does.
Check: Check the rear suspension and the boot floor on a ramp for signs of a hard-working life, and look at the interior wear against the stated mileage.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

Mileage is rarely the issue on these. So look at the service history and the body, because the engine is the part least likely to worry you.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 1.6 Valvematic is the definition of an appliance engine, and that's meant as praise. Port injection keeps the valves clean, the timing chain is durable, and there's no turbocharger or particulate filter to complicate ownership. It's genuinely slow in a car this size and you'll be planning overtakes, but nothing about it costs money unexpectedly. So if you want the lowest-risk car here and can live with the pace, this is a serious answer.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
