2.0 Valvematic 3ZR-FAE

The bigger Valvematic four, and the pick of the Avensis engines. Port injection keeps the valves clean, the chain is durable, and the only thing worth knowing is that the CVT it's usually paired with wants its fluid changed despite what the book says.

Overview

The 2.0 Valvematic is the 3ZR-FAE petrol version of the Toyota Avensis wagon (T27 Tourer), sold 2009–2018 with 152 PS and manual or automatic. Low risk at level 1. Nothing serious is recorded against the engine. The CVT wants its fluid changed despite the book, and that's the extent of it. 2 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

CVT fluid degradationToyota Multidrive S CVT€200–€350
A gradual change in how the gearbox holds revs, occasional shunting at low speed, and in neglected cases juddering under load. Toyota specifies the fluid as a lifetime fill. Specialists widely disagree, and a change at around 100,000 km is inexpensive insurance against a gearbox that's otherwise proved dependable.
Check: There's little to see at a viewing, so ask whether the fluid has ever been changed and budget for it if the answer is no.
TransmissionoccasionalNot detectable at viewingevidence: documented100–200k km
Very little recorded against the bodyAvensis platform€150–€400
Nothing widespread. Ordinary wear on the suspension and interior of a car that often worked as a fleet vehicle. This generation has no endemic body or electrical fault of the kind that defines its European rivals. What turns up is ordinary age and use, which is why the engine choice matters more here than the chassis does.
Check: Check the rear suspension and the boot floor on a ramp for signs of a hard-working life, and look at the interior wear against the stated mileage.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

High mileage with a full history is normal and fine. On a CVT car, ask whether the fluid has ever been changed.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 2.0 Valvematic is the engine that makes the Avensis make sense. It's smooth, adequately quick, and it inherits the same port injection and chain durability as the smaller unit while giving the car the pace it needs. The one thing worth knowing concerns the CVT that many of these carry, because Toyota's schedule treats the fluid as lifetime and specialists disagree. So change it, and otherwise budget for tyres, brakes and very little else. As a used purchase it's about as safe as this database gets.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
