2.0 Valvematic 3ZR-FAE

The bigger Valvematic four, and the pick of the Avensis engines. Port injection keeps the valves clean, the chain is durable, and the only thing worth knowing is that the CVT it's usually paired with wants its fluid changed despite what the book says.

Overview

The 2.0 Valvematic is the 3ZR-FAE petrol version of the Toyota RAV4 SUV (XA30), sold 2010–2012 with 158 PS and manual or automatic. Manageable at level 2. No expensive failure recorded, and the CVT is the only item worth a fluid history. 2 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Dual-mass flywheel and clutch wearGetrag six-speed manual€900–€1,600
Rattle at idle with the clutch up that disappears when you press it, judder on pull-away, gearbox rumble. The dual-mass flywheel's springs wear. Diesels and tuned petrols wear them faster.
Check: Idle in neutral with the clutch up and listen, then press the clutch. A rattle that stops when you press is the flywheel. Also check for judder pulling away in first.
TransmissioncommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented130250k km
CVT fluid degradationToyota Multidrive S CVT€200–€350
A gradual change in how the gearbox holds revs, occasional shunting at low speed, and in neglected cases juddering under load. Toyota specifies the fluid as a lifetime fill. Specialists widely disagree, and a change at around 100,000 km is inexpensive insurance against a gearbox that's otherwise proved dependable.
Check: There's little to see at a viewing, so ask whether the fluid has ever been changed and budget for it if the answer is no.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

There's no particulate filter and no high-pressure fuel system here, so a high-mileage example with a full record is a sound buy. These are usually the cars that get kept.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The Valvematic petrol arrived with the 2010 update and it's the RAV4 to buy if you want the reputation without the diesel's risk. It's thirstier and slower in gear, and nothing about it is likely to cost you a large sum. Ask for the CVT fluid history if the car has one and cycle the four-wheel-drive system on the test drive. So look at the rear tailgate hinges and the underside for corrosion, since that's what limits these rather than the mechanicals.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
