1.0 VVT-i 1KR-FE

Toyota's small three-cylinder, chain-driven and port-injected, and about as simple as a modern engine gets. It's slow on a motorway and it will run for a very long time on nothing but oil changes.

Overview

The 1.0 VVT-i is the 1KR-FE petrol version of the Toyota Yaris hatchback (XP90), sold 2005–2011 with 69 PS and manual or automatic. Manageable at level 2. The engine carries nothing expensive, and the MMT gearbox on automatic cars is the only real risk. 1 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

MMT clutch actuator and clutch wearToyota MultiMode automated manual (MMT)€250–€1,600
Jerky or slow gear changes, a flashing gear indicator, the car refusing to engage a gear, and a clutch that judders as it takes up drive. The automated manual uses an electric actuator to work a conventional clutch. The actuator wears and needs its clutch position re-learned, and the clutch itself wears faster than on a manual because the system slips it more.
Check: Drive it in town and feel every gear change, then watch the gear display for a flashing indicator. Ask when the clutch was last replaced and whether the actuator has been re-learned.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

These run to very high mileage on nothing but oil, so the odometer matters far less than the body and the gearbox. A tidy 200,000 km manual is a sound buy.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
A chain-driven three-cylinder with port injection is as simple as a modern engine gets, which is why this one has no expensive failure on its record. It's slow on a motorway and perfectly happy in town. Take the manual, because the MMT automated manual wears its clutch and actuator and that's the dearest item on the car. So look underneath at the rear beam and the sills, since corrosion ends these long before the engine does.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
