The 135i is the N54 petrol version of the BMW 1 Series coupe (E82), sold 2007–2010 with 306 PS and manual or automatic. High risk at level 4. Rough idle, cold-start stumble, misfire counts on one or two cylinders, occasional fuel smell. Piezo injectors leak or lose spray pattern. BMW revised the design repeatedly. The index number on the injector tells you which generation is fitted.
Check: Scan for per-cylinder misfire counts on a warm engine. It is the only honest check. Ask which injector index is fitted. Assume a car with no injector history will need some.

Metallic rattle on light throttle at low revs, later boost faults, underboost codes and power loss. Wastegate arm bushings wear and the flapper rattles in its seat. The turbos themselves are otherwise reasonably durable.
Check: Listen at cold idle and at light part throttle from 1,500–2,500 rpm. Rattle alone isn't fatal, cars run for years with it, but it should price the car.

Harsh or hunting shifts, a shunt between second and third, delayed engagement when cold. BMW declared the fluid a lifetime fill. It's not. Fluid degrades, the valve body wears, and the box eventually fails.
Check: Drive it from cold through every gear, then in manual mode. Ask when the fluid was last changed. "It's sealed for life" means never, and you should price a service in.

Check: Idle in neutral with the clutch up and listen, then press the clutch. A rattle that stops when you press is the flywheel. Also check for judder pulling away in first.

Long crank, extended cranking when warm, limp mode, misfire and hesitation under load. The direct-injection high-pressure pump loses delivery pressure and eventually fails outright. Early pumps went through several revisions.
Check: Insist on a cold start. Scan for fuel-pressure and misfire codes, and ask for a pump receipt with the part number. Revised part numbers appeared from 2010, so check the number rather than the build year.

The N54 135i is a 306 PS twin-turbo six for hot-hatch money, and the price reflects what it costs to keep. The high-pressure fuel pump, the piezo injectors, the wastegate rattle and the plastic cooling parts are all known, all recurring and all expensive. A car with a thick folder of recent work is a bargain; one without is a project. If you want the pace with less financial drama, the later N55 is worth the premium. Roughly the cost of one N54 repair.

Damp or soaked front carpets, a musty smell and fogged windows, and, when water reaches the footwell electronics, failed lights, windows or indicators. Most often the bulkhead scuttle drains block by the pollen filter and overflow into the cabin; perished door membranes and tailgate seals can add to it. Water then attacks the footwell module.
Check: Lift the front and rear carpets and press for damp. Check the boot and spare-wheel well for standing water, and confirm the scuttle drains near the pollen filter are clear.

Oil weeping down the back of the block, whistling from the engine at idle, rough idle, high crankcase vacuum pulling oil seals. The crankcase ventilation diaphragm is integrated into the plastic valve cover, so the whole cover is the repair.
Check: Listen for a whistle at idle with the oil cap on, then remove the cap, a strong change in idle points to the PCV. Look for oil residue at the rear of the head.

Harsh ride, vibration at speed, slow punctures. Stiff-sidewall run-flats transmit impacts straight into the rim, and these alloys crack rather than bend.
Check: Inspect the inner rim edge of every wheel for cracks and hairline splits, not just the face for kerbing. Budget for a set of conventional tyres; most owners switch and the ride improves markedly.

Bubbling at the rear arch lip, scaling on subframe mounting points and rear suspension components. Age plus road salt. This generation isn't a notorious rotter, but nothing from 2005–2013 is immune in a salted market.

The N55 135i is what the 135i should have been. The same 306 PS with a single twin-scroll turbo and a solenoid injector system that spares it the N54's fuel-pump and injector saga. It still carbons its valves and still wears its cooling parts, and the seven-speed DCT wants its fluid changed on time, but the frightening bills are gone. It costs more to buy than an N54 and that premium is the whole point, pay it. This is the quick E8x you can actually live with.
