What happens

Symptom. Metallic rattle on light throttle at low revs, later boost faults, underboost codes and power loss.

Cause. Wastegate arm bushings wear and the flapper rattles in its seat. The turbos themselves are otherwise reasonably durable.

How to check it

Cold start

Listen at cold idle and at light part throttle from 1,500–2,500 rpm. Rattle alone isn't fatal, cars run for years with it, but it should price the car.

You get one. If the engine is warm when you arrive, come back another day.

The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
