Overview

The M3 is the S65 petrol version of the BMW 3 Series coupe (E92), sold 2007–2013 with 420 PS and manual or automatic. High risk at level 4. Usually silent until it's not. Metal in the oil, then a knock, then a destroyed engine. Tight bearing clearances combined with low-viscosity oil and cold running wear the shells. BMW revised the bearing shells during production.
Check: Ask for a bearing replacement receipt or a recent oil analysis. This is the single question that decides an E9x M3 purchase. A car with documented bearings is worth several thousand more than one without, and it's cheaper to buy the done car.
Later parts: Revised bearing shells fitted later in production; most specialists still treat replacement as preventive maintenance around 100,000 km.

Check: Idle in neutral with the clutch up and listen, then press the clutch. A rattle that stops when you press is the flywheel. Also check for judder pulling away in first.

Jerky low-speed shifts, clutch adaptation faults, refusal to engage a gear, drivetrain warnings. The dual-clutch unit's clutch packs wear and the mechatronic unit's electronics and solenoids fail. Fluid service is required and often skipped.
Check: Drive it in traffic, not just on an open road. Low-speed crawling is where a tired DCT shows itself. Check the fluid service history; it needs doing roughly every 60,000 km.

Knocking over bad surfaces, vague or wandering steering, uneven front tyre wear, steering shimmy under braking. The front lower arm bushings are a known wear item on this chassis and go well before the ball joints.
Check: Drive over a rough road at low speed with the windows down and listen. Check the inside edges of the front tyres for feathering.

Harsh ride, vibration at speed, slow punctures. Stiff-sidewall run-flats transmit impacts straight into the rim, and these alloys crack rather than bend.
Check: Inspect the inner rim edge of every wheel for cracks and hairline splits, not just the face for kerbing. Budget for a set of conventional tyres; most owners switch and the ride improves markedly.

Bubbling at the rear arch lip, scaling on subframe mounting points and rear suspension components. Age plus road salt. This generation isn't a notorious rotter, but nothing from 2005–2013 is immune in a salted market.
Check: Put it on a lift and look at the rear subframe mounting points and the arch lips from behind. Largely a non-issue on cars from southern Europe, a real one on northern and Baltic cars.

Headlights, indicators, windows, wipers and central locking stop working at once, usually right after a battery change or a jump start. The module's memory corrupts when supply voltage dips. It is the single most common electrical failure on this generation.
Check: Test every window, both mirrors, the wipers, all exterior lights and the central locking before you drive. If any cluster of these is dead, this is why.

Mileage and servicing

Mileage is nearly irrelevant next to the bearing question. A 150,000 km car with bearings, throttle actuators and a rebuilt history is a better purchase than a 60,000 km garage queen with none of it, because short-trip, rarely-warmed use is exactly what wears these bearings. So ask for oil analysis if there are no bearing receipts.

There is no other engine like the S65 in a road car at this price: 8,300 rpm, individual throttle bodies, port injection so no carbon service, and a noise that justifies the fuel bill on its own. The ownership question is singular and unavoidable, rod bearings. Specialists treat replacement as maintenance around 100,000 km, and the car market has priced that in, so a documented car costs more and is nevertheless the cheaper car. Beyond that. Then budget for throttle actuators, an inspection-driven valve service, tyres, and roughly 15 l/100 km. Manuals are the enthusiast's choice; DCT cars are faster and need their own fluid service. Values are rising for good examples, which makes the wrong purchase expensive twice over.
