1.6 TDCi T1DA

The volume Focus diesel, shared with the PSA group. It's economical and adequate, and its weak point is the turbo oil feed, which cokes up if oil changes are skipped and takes the turbo with it.

Overview

The 1.6 TDCi is the T1DA diesel version of the Ford Focus hatchback (Mk3), sold 2011–2018 with 115 PS and manual_6. Demands diligence at level 3. The turbo oil feed cokes up when oil changes are skipped, and it takes the turbo with it. 4 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost

Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.

Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.

Turbo oil feed blockageT1DA 1.6 TDCi€300–€1,500
A whine or rattle from the turbo under load, loss of power, blue smoke and eventually a boost fault. The same narrow oil feed as its PSA sibling, and the same outcome. Skipped oil changes coke the pipe, the turbo bearing starves, and debris can be drawn through the engine afterwards.
Check: Read the oil-change record first, then listen for a whine on boost and look for oil in the intercooler pipework.
Turbo & intakecommonPartly detectableevidence: documented100180k km
Infotainment and module faultsFocus platform€150–€700
A screen that freezes or reboots, Bluetooth and audio dropping out, and occasional warning lights that clear on a restart. The pre-facelift infotainment is the weak point and its module and software are where the faults concentrate. A weak battery makes all of it worse, since low voltage upsets several modules at once.
Check: Work the infotainment for several minutes on a test drive, pair a phone, and check whether the battery has been replaced. Facelift cars from 2014 are much better here.

EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 1.6 TDCi is the volume Focus diesel and it's perfectly good, with one habit that decides whether you get a bargain. The oil feed to the turbo runs through a narrow pipe that cokes up when servicing is stretched, and once it blocks the turbo goes. That failure is entirely preventable and entirely down to the previous owner. So read the service book before you drive the car, and treat missing stamps as a reason to walk.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
