2.0 TDCi TXBA

The volume Mondeo diesel and the one every independent has worked on. It's strong and cheap to run, with a dual-mass flywheel and a particulate filter that between them account for most of what these cars cost to own.

Overview

The 2.0 TDCi is the TXBA diesel version of the Ford Mondeo wagon (Mk4 Estate), sold 2007–2014 with 163 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. The dual-mass flywheel and the particulate filter are the recurring bills, and the PowerShift automatic offered later has a poor record. 14 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost

Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.

PowerShift dry-clutch shudder and failureFord PowerShift six-speed dual clutch€1,200–€2,200
Shuddering as the car pulls away, jerky low-speed shifts, hesitation before engagement, and eventually a warning light or loss of drive. The dry dual-clutch pack wears and the control module's adaptation drifts with it. Some cars were improved under service actions, so which parts are fitted and when matters more than the mileage.
Check: Drive it slowly in traffic and through a car park, feeling for shudder as it takes up drive, then scan the transmission and ask for any service-action history.
TransmissioncommonPartly detectableevidence: documented80160k km
Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.
EmissionscommonPartly detectableevidence: documented120250k km
Dual-mass flywheel wearTXBA/KLBA 2.0 TDCi€700–€1,200
A rattle at idle that quietens when you press the clutch, vibration when pulling away, and a rumble through the pedal. The springs in the dual-mass flywheel wear and the unit loses its damping. It's a wear item rather than a defect, and it's usually replaced together with the clutch because the labour is shared.
Check: Idle in neutral with the bonnet up and listen for a rattle, then dip the clutch and see whether it goes quiet. That's the classic tell.
TransmissioncommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented130220k km
Front control arm bushing wearE9x chassis€300–€700
Knocking over bad surfaces, vague or wandering steering, uneven front tyre wear, steering shimmy under braking. The front lower arm bushings are a known wear item on this chassis and go well before the ball joints.
Check: Drive over a rough road at low speed with the windows down and listen. Check the inside edges of the front tyres for feathering.
SuspensionuniversalDetectable at viewingevidence: documented80150k km
Harsh ride, vibration at speed, slow punctures. Stiff-sidewall run-flats transmit impacts straight into the rim, and these alloys crack rather than bend.
Check: Inspect the inner rim edge of every wheel for cracks and hairline splits, not just the face for kerbing. Budget for a set of conventional tyres; most owners switch and the ride improves markedly.
SuspensioncommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented
Bubbling at the rear arch lip, scaling on subframe mounting points and rear suspension components. Age plus road salt. This generation isn't a notorious rotter, but nothing from 2005–2013 is immune in a salted market.
Check: Put it on a lift and look at the rear subframe mounting points and the arch lips from behind. Largely a non-issue on cars from southern Europe, a real one on northern and Baltic cars.
Body & corrosionoccasionalDetectable at viewingevidence: documented
Rear suspension bush and subframe wearMondeo platform€250–€700
A knock from the rear over bumps, vague handling, and uneven tyre wear at the back. The rear multi-link bushes wear, and cars that carried weight or covered high mileage go first. Corrosion of the subframe is a second issue in salted climates.
Check: On a ramp, lever the rear bushes for splitting and look at the subframe for corrosion, then listen for a knock over rough roads.
SuspensioncommonPartly detectableevidence: documented130230k km
Footwell module (FRM) failureE9x chassis€150–€700
Headlights, indicators, windows, wipers and central locking stop working at once, usually right after a battery change or a jump start. The module's memory corrupts when supply voltage dips. It is the single most common electrical failure on this generation.
Check: Test every window, both mirrors, the wipers, all exterior lights and the central locking before you drive. If any cluster of these is dead, this is why.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

A rattle at idle that disappears when you dip the clutch points at the flywheel. That, and the filter history, matter more than the odometer.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 2.0 TDCi is the volume engine and it's the reason a Mondeo makes sense as a used buy: strong, economical, and understood by every independent garage. Two things account for most of what these cost to own. The dual-mass flywheel wears and rattles at idle, and the particulate filter suffers if the car only ever did short trips. Both are known quantities with known prices. So take a manual, check for the rattle, ask about journeys, and you have the best-value car in this database.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
