1.8 TDCi QYBA

The entry diesel, and a belt-driven engine whose fuel pump is lubricated by the fuel itself. So a bad tank or a worn pump can send debris right through the injectors, which is the expensive version of this engine's story.

Overview

The 1.8 TDCi is the QYBA diesel version of the Ford Mondeo hatchback (Mk4), sold 2007–2012 with 125 PS and manual_6. Demands diligence at level 3. The fuel pump is lubricated by the fuel itself, so pump wear can send debris through the injectors and turn a small fault into a fuel-system rebuild. 4 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost

Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.

Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.

Fuel pump wear and injector contaminationQYBA 1.8 TDCi€800–€3,000
Hard starting, a loss of power under load, and in the worst case a car that stops and won't restart. The high-pressure pump is lubricated by the diesel passing through it, so wear inside the pump can shed fine metal into the fuel system and damage the injectors. Poor fuel and neglected filter changes both accelerate it, and once debris is circulating the repair covers the whole system.
Check: Ask for the fuel filter record and any fuel-system work, then scan for fuel-pressure faults. A car with no filter history should be priced as a risk.
FueloccasionalPartly detectableevidence: documented120–220k km
Rear suspension bush and subframe wearMondeo platform€250–€700
A knock from the rear over bumps, vague handling, and uneven tyre wear at the back. The rear multi-link bushes wear, and cars that carried weight or covered high mileage go first. Corrosion of the subframe is a second issue in salted climates.
Check: On a ramp, lever the rear bushes for splitting and look at the subframe for corrosion, then listen for a knock over rough roads.
SuspensioncommonPartly detectableevidence: documented130–230k km
EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

Ask where it was fuelled and whether the filter has been changed on time. Those two things predict this engine's health better than mileage.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 1.8 TDCi is the entry diesel and it's perfectly adequate in a car this size, with enough torque to make it easy going. The thing to understand is the fuel system: the high-pressure pump relies on diesel for its own lubrication, so a worn pump can shed metal into the injectors and turn a manageable repair into a very expensive one. Regular filter changes and decent fuel are the whole defence. So buy one with a documented fuel filter record and it's a cheap and useful car.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
