Module and electronics failures
Attaches to E6X at chassis level · Electrical · carried by 16 variants across 2 chassis
Overview
Module and electronics failures is a common fault recorded against E6X at chassis level, typically from 120–220k km. It shows up as warning lights that come and go, iDrive freezing or rebooting, comfort access refusing to open the doors, and occasional non-starts. Where it's documented, the repair runs €150–€1,200 (battery and registration at the cheap end, module replacement and coding at the dear end, costs dated 2026-07), and it can be partly checked before you buy. 16 variants across 2 chassis in this database inherit it.
What happens
Symptom. Warning lights that come and go, iDrive freezing or rebooting, comfort access refusing to open the doors, and occasional non-starts.
Cause. The E60 carries far more electronic modules than the E90 and they're now old. A weak battery is the most common root cause, since low voltage upsets several modules at once, though genuine module and connector failures do happen.
How to check it
OBD scan
Scan every module rather than just the engine, cycle the iDrive and the comfort access, and check whether the battery has been replaced and registered.
Mandatory. A seller who refuses a scan has answered the question.

The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
