The 520d is the M47 diesel version of the BMW 5 Series wagon (E61), sold 2005–2007 with 163 PS and manual or automatic. Manageable at level 2. The M47 520d is the sensible entry to the E60 and it's often overlooked, because buyers chase the later car. Its advantage is simple. The timing chain sits at the front of the engine, where it doesn't fail the way the N47's does at the back. It's not fast in a car this size and the cabin noise gives the engine away, but the running costs are genuinely low and the bottom end is close to indestructible. So check the swirl flaps and the turbo actuator, keep the oil fresh, and it will just keep going.

This is the E60 most people end up looking at, because it's the efficient one and there are thousands of them. The engine is genuinely good in isolation: strong mid-range, real economy on a run, and enough pace for the car. But it's an N47, and the rear-mounted chain is the fault that ends these engines without much warning. So the purchase is decided by paperwork rather than by condition. Documented chain work makes it a smart buy, and its absence makes it a gamble on a four-figure repair.
