Overview
Timing chain tensioner failure is a common fault recorded against ea888-chain-tensioner at component level, typically from 60–180k km. It shows up as rattle for a second or two on cold start, chain noise from the back of the engine, timing correlation faults, or no start after the car has stood. Where it's documented, the repair runs €900–€1,800 (gearbox out at an independent; far more if the chain has jumped, costs dated 2026-07), and it can be checked before you buy. 14 variants across 7 chassis in this database inherit it.
What happens
Symptom. Rattle for a second or two on cold start, chain noise from the back of the engine, timing correlation faults, or no start after the car has stood.
Cause. The early hydraulic tensioner can lose tension and allow the chain to jump. The chain is at the gearbox end of the engine, so access is poor and a failure usually bends valves.
Later parts. Revised tensioner part number; fitted from later production

How to check it
Cold start
Insist on a stone-cold start and stand at the bulkhead end of the engine. Any rattle beyond the first half-second is this until proven otherwise. Ask for a tensioner receipt with the part number. The revised part is the fix, not the mileage.
You get one. If the engine is warm when you arrive, come back another day.

The last column is the point. The same repair is an inconvenience on one variant and a reason to scrap the car on another. A failure costing a quarter of the vehicle's value changes the purchase decision regardless of how rare it is.
