Check: Scan for per-cylinder misfire counts on a warm engine. It is the only honest check. Ask which injector index is fitted. Assume a car with no injector history will need some.

The N54 is both the enthusiast's argument for this generation and the cautionary tale about it. Nothing on it's structurally fragile. The block, chain and gearbox are strong and the tuning headroom is real. What it does is nickel-and-dime you in €800 increments through the fuel and cooling systems, forever, and the cars are now cheap enough that most owners have deferred that work rather than done it. So buy it the way you'd buy an old Porsche: pick the car with the thickest folder, not the lowest price or the fewest kilometres. If the folder is thin, either walk or price in €3,000–4,000 and be honest about whether you'll actually spend it.

BMW replaced the N54's twin turbos with a single twin-scroll unit and quietly fixed most of what people complain about. Output is identical, the mid-range is probably better, and the high-pressure pump is no longer a running joke. It still leaks from the valve cover, still cokes its intake valves, still needs the cooling system looking after, but none of those are the four-figure surprises the N54 delivers. The price gap between the two is roughly one N54 fuel-system repair, which makes this the cheaper car over any realistic ownership period. The 2010 changeover year contains both engines, so check the engine code rather than the registration date.
