Best value: 1.2 petrol, chain-driven and naturally aspirated, with no expensive failure on its record. Check the underside for corrosion, because that's what finishes these rather than any mechanical fault. The 1.3 DDiS diesel only makes sense on high mileage, and it needs the particulate filter history that town cars rarely have. So look at the suspension and the rear beam on any car that's lived on poor roads.
