1.2 K12B

A chain-driven port-injected four with variable valve timing and nothing else to go wrong. It's the reason a Swift costs so little to keep, and it will outlast the bodywork around it.

Overview

The 1.2 is the K12B petrol version of the Suzuki Swift hatchback (FZ), sold 2010–2017 with 94 PS and manual or automatic. Low risk at level 1. There's no turbocharger, no filter and no expensive failure recorded against this engine. 1 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Underbody and rear beam corrosionFZ body€200–€900
Flaking rust on the rear beam, the subframe and the fuel and brake lines, sometimes with an advisory already on the record. Protection underneath was thin for cars sold into salted climates, and the beam and its mounts hold moisture. The mechanicals outlast the structure here, which inverts the usual buying advice.
Check: Get the car on a ramp or at least look underneath with a torch, paying attention to the rear beam, its mounting points and the brake lines. This matters more than anything under the bonnet on these.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

These run to high mileage with nothing more than oil and tyres, so a 180,000 km car with a stamped book is a sound buy. The bodywork will tell you more than the odometer does.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
A Swift is light, keen and genuinely fun on a back road, and the 1.2 has a timing chain rather than a belt, so there's no scheduled engine job waiting for you. Spend your inspection time underneath, since corrosion on the subframe and the rear beam is what finishes these. Check the suspension for knocks over rough ground. So take the four-wheel-drive version if you find one, because it's rare and it costs almost nothing extra to run.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
