Likely spend is the mid cost of every issue rated common or universal, added together, what an unmaintained example owes over the next few years, not a prediction for any one car. Worst case if everything here failed at once is €5,600, which isn't a realistic scenario but is a useful ceiling.

All issues, by system

Transmission

MMT clutch actuator and clutch wearToyota MultiMode automated manual (MMT)€250–€1,600
Jerky or slow gear changes, a flashing gear indicator, the car refusing to engage a gear, and a clutch that judders as it takes up drive. The automated manual uses an electric actuator to work a conventional clutch. The actuator wears and needs its clutch position re-learned, and the clutch itself wears faster than on a manual because the system slips it more.
Check: Drive it in town and feel every gear change, then watch the gear display for a flashing indicator. Ask when the clutch was last replaced and whether the actuator has been re-learned.

Engine

Heavy oil consumption (early 1.4 D-4D)1ND-TV 1.4 D-4D€300–€3,000
The oil level falling fast between services, blue smoke on start-up or under load, and a sooty exhaust tip. Piston ring and bore wear on early engines led to heavy consumption, and Toyota replaced short blocks on some affected cars. An engine that's been replaced is a good sign, and one that's still burning oil is carrying the bill.
Check: Check the oil level cold and ask how often the owner tops it up. Look at the exhaust for heavy soot and watch for smoke when the car pulls away, then ask whether the engine has ever been replaced.

Emissions

EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

How to read this

Every issue is authored once against the part that actually carries it: the engine, the gearbox, the chassis or a shared component, and inherited by every variant that has that part. The badge next to each issue says where it comes from, so you can tell an 1ND-TV problem from an E9x problem.

Evidence tiers. Manufacturer means a recall, technical bulletin or revised part number. Documented means workshop data or multiple independent sources. Reported means owner consensus with no hard confirmation, and never sets a risk level on its own.
