2.5T B5254T

The turbocharged five-cylinder petrol. It's smooth and quick and drinks accordingly, which is why so few were sold. Mechanically it's sound, and the oil trap and the PCV system are the maintenance items worth knowing about.

Overview

The 2.5T is the B5254T petrol version of the Volvo S60 sedan (P3), sold 2010–2014 with 231 PS and auto_6_aisin. Manageable at level 2. A sound turbocharged five with no endemic failure, so the oil trap and the cooling system are the items to watch. 2 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost

Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.

Carbon buildup on intake valvesdirect injection€400–€700
Rough cold idle, slow throttle response, misfires, gradual loss of low-end response. Direct injection puts no fuel over the intake valves, so crankcase vapour deposits bake on undisturbed.
Check: Not visible without a borescope. Treat it as a service item that's due unless there's a receipt. It's not a fault, it's an unbudgeted maintenance cost.
Turbo & intakeuniversalNot detectable at viewingevidence: documented80120k km
Front suspension bush and link wearS60 platform€300–€700
Knocking over bumps and at low speed, vague steering, and uneven wear across the front tyres. These are heavy cars and the front bushes and links wear accordingly. It's ordinary wear rather than a design fault, but it turns up sooner than owners expect and on a set of tyres too.
Check: Drive over rough surfaces listening for a knock, then on a ramp lever each front bush and link for play and look at the inside edges of the tyres.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 2.5T is the turbocharged five-cylinder petrol, and it's a lovely thing to drive: smooth, quick and quiet in a way the diesels are not. And it also drinks, which is why so few were sold and why they're cheap now. Mechanically it's sound, with the oil trap and the cooling system as the maintenance items worth budgeting for. If your mileage is low and you value refinement over running costs, this is the one to have.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
