1.6 JTDm 940A3

The volume Giulietta diesel and a genuinely durable engine. It's economical on a run and it asks only for oil changes on schedule and journeys long enough to clear the filter.

Overview

The 1.6 JTDm is the 940A3 diesel version of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta hatchback (940), sold 2010–2020 with 105 PS and manual_6. Manageable at level 2. No headline engine failure, though the particulate filter costs money on a car used only in town. 4 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

M32 gearbox bearing failureGM/Fiat M32 six-speed manual€700–€1,600
A rumble or whine that changes as you select different gears, worst in fifth and sixth, and eventually a whine under load in every gear. The M32 runs a small oil volume and its end bearings wear, which lets the shafts move and destroys the gear teeth. The factory never scheduled an oil change, so most of these have run their whole lives on the original fill.
Check: Drive at a steady speed in each gear with the window down and listen for a rumble that changes pitch with the gear rather than with road speed. Ask when the gearbox oil was last changed, because most owners have never done it.
TransmissioncommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented100180k km
Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.
EmissionscommonPartly detectableevidence: documented120250k km
Warning lights that appear and clear, an infotainment screen that reboots, and switches or window motors that stop working. The car carries a lot of small modules and their connectors age, particularly where damp reaches them. A tired battery makes several unrelated-looking faults appear at once, which is what confuses most diagnoses.
Check: Work every switch, window, mirror and screen function during the viewing, then scan every module rather than just the engine. Check the battery's age while you're there.

EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

This engine family is durable and a 250,000 km example with a full record is a reasonable buy. Journey history is the number that matters, because the filter needs runs rather than distance.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 1.6 JTDm has proved itself across the Fiat group and there's nothing dramatic on its record, which makes it the low-risk way into a car that drives this well. Check the filter history and ask how the car has been used, since short journeys cause the only expensive fault it has. Listen to the M32 gearbox on the move, because its bearings are a known weakness across several makes. So work every switch and screen in the cabin, as the electrics are what owners complain about rather than the engine.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
