1.6 TDI CAYC

The common-rail diesel that replaced the PD engines. Much quieter and cleaner, and dependent on the emissions hardware the PD never had.

Overview

The 1.6 TDI is the CAYC diesel version of the Audi A3 hatchback (8PA), sold 2009–2013 with 105 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. The common-rail 1.6 depends on emissions hardware the old 1.9 never had. The DPF and EGR are the recurring cost. 5 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Dry-clutch DSG mechatronic failureVW group DQ200 seven-speed dry-clutch DSG€1,200–€2,800
Juddering at low speed, harsh or refused engagement, warning lights, or a car that won't select a gear. The seven-speed dry-clutch unit's mechatronic and clutch packs wear, and the clutches are far less tolerant of stop-start use than the wet-clutch six-speed.
Check: Drive from cold in traffic. Judder pulling away, hesitation between first and second, or a jolt on the overrun are all this. Ask for the service history. These need fluid and clutch adaptation work.
TransmissioncommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented80180k km
Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.
EmissionscommonPartly detectableevidence: documented120250k km
Rear multi-link bush and drop-link wearA3 platform€200–€500
A knock or clunk from the rear over bumps and potholes, vague handling, and uneven rear tyre wear. The rear multi-link control-arm bushes and drop links wear, often several together, so the noise is worth diagnosing before replacing parts. Age and mileage both drive it.
Check: Drive over rough surfaces listening for a rear clunk; on a ramp, lever each rear arm bush and drop link for play.
SuspensioncommonPartly detectableevidence: documented100200k km
EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.
EmissionsoccasionalPartly detectableevidence: manufacturer120250k km
Instrument-cluster (FIS) pixel failureA3 platform€120–€250
Missing pixels, lines or columns on the central driver-information display, often worse when the car is warm. The cluster's LCD and its ribbon and solder joints degrade with age. It's a nuisance rather than a safety fault, though a full cluster failure is possible.
Check: Cycle through all the trip and service menus checking every segment, both cold and after the car has warmed up.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

A car used mostly for short trips will have a stressed DPF; motorway history is worth more than a low odometer here.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The 1.6 TDI common-rail is the quiet, clean replacement for the pump-düse diesels and the most economical A3 you can buy, but it trades the old engine's mechanical simplicity for a particulate filter and EGR system that need the right use to stay healthy. On a car that sees regular longer runs it's superb; on a town-only car with a part-blocked DPF it becomes a limp-mode headache. So buy one with motorway miles and a clean emissions history, and confirm the dry-clutch DSG service on automatics.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
