335d M57
The strongest engine in the range. Bottom ends routinely pass 400,000 km; everything that fails on it's bolted to the outside and priced accordingly.
Overview
The 335d is the M57 diesel version of the BMW 3 Series coupe (E92), sold 2006–2010 with 286 PS and auto_6_zf. Demands diligence at level 3. The M57 bottom end is as strong as ever, but the sequential twin-turbo setup adds actuators and control hardware that fail in the €800–2,000 bracket. 16 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Known issues, ranked by expected cost
Faults recorded against this engine, its components and its chassis, ranked by likelihood × repair cost. Costs are indicative ranges with a stated labour basis.
Ranked by probability × repair cost, not by how loudly a failure is discussed. Inherited from the engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components, each written once. All 16 issues in full →
Pre-purchase inspection
The same issue records, reordered into the sequence you can actually check them in: cold start, static, drive, paperwork.
1Static checksEngine off, ideally on a lift.
2On the driveInclude low-speed manoeuvring, not just an open road.
3PaperworkOn these cars the folder is most of the value.

Mileage and servicing
What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.
The engine won't be the problem at 250,000 km; the turbos and their control hardware might be. So check for limp-mode history and full-throttle hesitation. Cars that spent their lives on motorways are in much better shape than urban ones, as with every diesel here.
| Service item | Interval | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Turbo actuators and control The 335d-specific expense; failures here are four figures | inspect at 150,000 km+ | €800–2,000 |
| Swirl flaps Same M57 flap risk as the 330d | preventive | €400–900 |
| Automatic fluid + pan 580 Nm is the most torque this gearbox sees in the range | 80,000 km | €400–600 |

United States vs Europe
1 EUR = 1.08 USD ·US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Good buy isn't the same as cheapest. The good-buy figure assumes the known failure items are either done with receipts or verifiably not yet due. Full breakdown by facelift phase →
