The 330d is the M57 diesel version of the BMW 3 Series convertible (E93), sold 2007–2008 with 231 PS and manual or automatic. Manageable at level 2. Nothing on the M57 fails catastrophically. Harsh or hunting shifts, a shunt between second and third, delayed engagement when cold. BMW declared the fluid a lifetime fill. It's not. Fluid degrades, the valve body wears, and the box eventually fails.
Check: Drive it from cold through every gear, then in manual mode. Ask when the fluid was last changed. "It's sealed for life" means never, and you should price a service in.

If someone asks which E9x to buy and gives no other constraints, this is the answer. It's quick enough to make a 335i feel unnecessary in daily use, returns diesel economy on a run, and the M57 has a reputation for durability that it earns. The failures are all external and priced sensibly: swirl flaps worth removing preventively, a turbo actuator that sticks, injector seals that weep on high-mileage cars. Combine it with the ZF automatic and it's one of the better long-distance cars of its era. Have the swirl flaps dealt with, service the gearbox despite what BMW says, and keep it.

Late-production examples with 200,000 km are normal and fine. The things that matter are EGR recall completion, evidence of regular oil changes at sensible intervals, and a usage pattern that let the DPF do its job. Cold-start rattle at the bulkhead is worth listening for even though the six rarely suffers it.

The N57 330d is the car the rest of this range is measured against. It will out-accelerate most 2010s hot hatches, cruise at 6 l/100 km, and tow. It's also the most complicated diesel here, with EGR, DPF, swirl flaps and a rear-mounted chain, so it needs an owner who does maintenance on time rather than when a light comes on. Then do that and it's close to unkillable. The facelift cars with the eight-speed-era interior and the ZF automatic are the ones to hold out for. Verify the EGR recall by VIN before you buy. It's free and it was issued over a fire risk.
