Transmission

Harsh or hunting shifts, a shunt between second and third, delayed engagement when cold. BMW declared the fluid a lifetime fill. It's not. Fluid degrades, the valve body wears, and the box eventually fails.
Check: Drive it from cold through every gear, then in manual mode. Ask when the fluid was last changed. "It's sealed for life" means never, and you should price a service in.

Rattle at idle with the clutch up that disappears when you press it, judder on pull-away, gearbox rumble. The dual-mass flywheel's springs wear. Diesels and tuned petrols wear them faster.
Check: Idle in neutral with the clutch up and listen, then press the clutch. A rattle that stops when you press is the flywheel. Also check for judder pulling away in first.

Fluid on the bellhousing or the exhaust, gearbox fault warnings, erratic shifting once the level drops. The plastic adapter sleeve carrying the wiring through the case hardens and leaks; the integrated pan gasket does the same.
Check: On the lift, look at the gearbox pan and the bellhousing seam for wet ATF, it's red-brown and unmistakable.

Drivetrain

A shudder or binding on full lock at low speed, a whine from under the car at a steady throttle, and a four-wheel-drive warning in later stages. The transfer case oil was never scheduled for replacement, and the servo actuator and chain inside wear once it degrades. The front propshaft coupling perishes separately and produces a similar noise.
Check: Drive the car slowly in a tight full-lock circle in both directions on a dry surface and feel for shudder or binding. Then listen at a steady 60 km/h for a whine that tracks road speed.

Emissions

Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.

Turbo & intake

Sudden loss of power on a hard pull, limp mode that clears on restart, underboost or overboost codes. Soot binds the variable vanes or the actuator linkage seizes.
Check: Do a full-throttle pull in third from 1,500 rpm to the limiter. Hesitation or a drop into limp mode is this fault. Do this twice.

Engine

Oil filter housing gasket leakoil filter housing€300–€600
Oil pooling on the subframe, oil on the serpentine belt, drips on the driveway. The gasket between the filter housing and the block fails. Oil then lands on the belt, and a belt that shreds can be drawn into the front crank seal.
Check: Put the car on a lift. Check the belt itself for oil contamination. An oily belt is the version of this fault that ends badly.

Swirl flap wear and ingestionswirl flaps€400–€900
Often none until it happens. Rough running, then in the worst case an engine destroyed by an ingested flap. The intake manifold's swirl flaps run on spindles that wear. A detached flap can be drawn into a cylinder.
Check: Not visible without removing the manifold. Ask whether the flaps have been removed or the manifold replaced. Many well-kept examples have had this done preventively, and that's a selling point.

Fuel

Injector seal leak (soot around injectors)M57D30TU2 / M57D30TOP€400–€1,400
Ticking that grows louder, black soot deposits around the injector bases, diesel smell in the cabin. Copper sealing washers fail and combustion gases track past the injector, eventually welding it into the head.
Check: Remove the engine cover and look at the base of each injector for black crusting. Caught early this is cheap; ignored it's a cylinder head job.

Every issue is authored once against the part that actually carries it: the engine, the gearbox, the chassis or a shared component, and inherited by every variant that has that part. The badge next to each issue says where it comes from, so you can tell an M57 problem from an E9x problem.

Evidence tiers. Manufacturer means a recall, technical bulletin or revised part number. Documented means workshop data or multiple independent sources. Reported means owner consensus with no hard confirmation, and never sets a risk level on its own.
