BKD 2.0 TDI PD

The 140 PS pump-düse 2.0 TDI: the pre-facelift diesel, unit-injector rather than common-rail. Strong and torquey, with the pump-düse family's injector-loom fault and, unlike the 1.9, sixteen valves and a chain-driven oil pump that spares it the later engine's balance-shaft failure.

Engine and component issues

EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

Pump-düse injector loom and injector wearBKD 2.0 TDI PD€150–€900
A cold misfire or judder, the engine seeming to run on three cylinders when cold, lumpy idle and a misfire warning that often clears as it warms. Most often the injector wiring loom chafes through from engine vibration and gives an intermittent signal; separately the pump-düse unit injectors themselves wear. Diagnose which before spending.
Check: Start it cold and feel for a stumble, then read the injector quantity-deviation values on a diagnostic to find the offending cylinder; inspect the loom for chafing.
