The 2.0 TDI is the BKD diesel version of the Volkswagen Passat sedan (B6), sold 2005–2008 with 140 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. The 140 PS pump-düse 2.0 TDI: the pre-facelift diesel, unit-injector rather than common-rail. Strong and torquey, with the pump-düse family's injector-loom fault and, unlike the 1.9, sixteen valves and a chain-driven oil pump that spares it the later engine's balance-shaft failure.

The BKD is the right engine for a Passat: enough torque to move the car properly, real economy on a run, and the chain-driven oil pump that keeps it clear of the balance-shaft failure of the later common-rail engines. What it does share with the pump-duse family is the injector loom and injector wear, both of which show up as a stumble when cold. So get it scanned, keep the timing belt in date, and confirm the gearbox service on DSG cars.

A sudden oil-pressure warning followed quickly by engine seizure, usually with little or no prior warning. The hex coupling that drives the oil pump off the balance-shaft module can round off, stopping oil delivery. The undersized early hex is the weak point; an updated module addressed it.
Check: You can't see it on a viewing, this is a paperwork check. Look for the updated oil-pump module in the history, or a specialist who has inspected it; treat an undocumented high-miler as carrying the risk.

The common-rail 2.0 is the quieter, cleaner engine and in a Passat it suits the car well. The problem is the oil-pump balance-shaft drive, whose hex coupling can round off and stop oil delivery, seizing the engine with essentially no warning. Nothing on a test drive reveals it. So buy on paperwork: an updated module, or a specialist who has had the sump off, is what makes this car safe. Add the usual particulate filter care and it's a strong diesel with one serious caveat.
