2.2 SkyActiv-D SH-VPTS

A low-compression diesel that's smooth, quick and very economical on a run. It hates short journeys, because failed filter regenerations add fuel to the oil and the level climbs, so the usage history matters more than the mileage.

Overview

The 2.2 SkyActiv-D is the SH-VPTS diesel version of the Mazda CX-5 SUV (KE), sold 2012–2017 with 150 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. Oil dilution from failed filter regenerations is common on town-driven cars and damages the engine if ignored. 3 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Oil dilution and rising oil levelSH-VPTS 2.2 SkyActiv-D€150–€4,500
An oil level that climbs above the maximum mark, a smell of diesel on the dipstick, and in later stages an oil warning or turbo and bearing wear. Each particulate filter regeneration injects extra fuel, and on short journeys the regeneration doesn't finish. Some of that fuel ends up in the sump, which raises the level and thins the oil. Mazda issued software updates and oil-level checks, but usage is still the deciding factor.
Check: Pull the dipstick and check the level against the marks, then smell it for diesel. Ask how the car was used and whether the software update has been applied, and walk away from a town car with a rising level.
EnginecommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented40150k km
Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.

EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

A high-mileage commuter is healthier than a low-mileage town car here, because the filter needs long runs to clear itself. Usage history is the number that matters.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
The SkyActiv-D is smooth, quick and remarkably economical, and it rewards a buyer who covers distance. On short journeys the filter can't finish its regeneration, fuel ends up in the oil and the level rises, which thins the oil and wears the engine. Check the dipstick for a level above the maximum mark and a smell of diesel. So ask how the car was used and walk away from a town car with a rising oil level.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
