1.5 dCi K9K

The most-produced small diesel in Europe, shared across Renault, Nissan and Dacia. It's absurdly economical and cheap to fix, and injector wear is the fault that defines it, with a leaking injector able to wash a bore.

The 1.5 dCi is the K9K diesel version of the Renault Mégane hatchback (III), sold 2008–2016 with 110 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.

A rough idle, smoke on start-up, uneven running and in the worst case low compression on one cylinder. The injectors wear and can leak, letting combustion gases and fuel past the seat. Left alone, fuel washes the oil film off the bore and damages it, which turns an injector job into an engine one.
Check: Read the injector correction values on a diagnostic and look for one cylinder out of line with the rest. Ask what injector work has been done, because most high-mileage examples have had some.

Jerky or harsh shifts, clutch flare or judder, an occasional drop to neutral or limp mode, and gearbox fault codes. Mechatronic valve-body and pressure-accumulator faults, aggravated by a missed 60,000 km oil-and-filter service. The wet six-speed is the more durable of the DSGs but not maintenance-free.
Check: Confirm the DSG oil-and-filter history, test-drive for harsh or flaring shifts at low speed and under load, and scan for gearbox faults.

The car failing to recognise the key card, a no-start with the dashboard lit, or an intermittent immobiliser warning. The card reader and the ignition electronics wear, and the cards themselves fail with age. It's rarely expensive to put right, but it strands the car when it happens, which is what gives it its reputation.
Check: Start the car several times with both cards if two exist, and treat a seller who can only produce one working card as telling you something.

Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.

The 1.5 dCi Mégane is one of the cheapest cars to run in this database, and the engine is shared with millions of Nissans, so parts and knowledge are everywhere. Two things need checking. Injector wear is the engine's defining fault and a leaking one can damage a bore, so have the correction values read. Then the electronics, because the key card system and the interior modules are where Renault's reputation was earned. Scan everything and buy the documented car.
