1.6 TDI CAYC

The common-rail diesel that replaced the PD engines. Much quieter and cleaner, and dependent on the emissions hardware the PD never had.

Overview

The 1.6 TDI is the CAYC diesel version of the SEAT Ibiza hatchback (6J), sold 2009–2015 with 105 PS and manual or automatic. Demands diligence at level 3. The particulate filter and the EGR cooler are what cost money, and town use causes both. 4 failure modes are recorded against its engine, gearbox, chassis and shared components. Prices on this page are illustrative placeholders rather than a sourced market sample. See the methodology for how the bands are derived.

Dry-clutch DSG mechatronic failureVW group DQ200 seven-speed dry-clutch DSG€1,200–€2,800
Juddering at low speed, harsh or refused engagement, warning lights, or a car that won't select a gear. The seven-speed dry-clutch unit's mechatronic and clutch packs wear, and the clutches are far less tolerant of stop-start use than the wet-clutch six-speed.
Check: Drive from cold in traffic. Judder pulling away, hesitation between first and second, or a jolt on the overrun are all this. Ask for the service history. These need fluid and clutch adaptation work.
TransmissioncommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented80180k km
Warning light, limp mode, oil level rising above the maximum mark from fuel dilution. The filter needs sustained hot running to regenerate. A car used for short urban trips never completes a regeneration cycle.
Check: Read the DPF soot load and the distance since the last regeneration on a scan tool, and check the engine oil level and smell it for diesel. Ask what the car was used for. A short-trip city diesel is the wrong car regardless of mileage.
EmissionscommonPartly detectableevidence: documented120250k km
Water ingress into the footwellsIbiza platform€120–€900
Damp carpets on one or both sides, misted windows that won't clear, and electrical faults that come and go with the weather. The plenum drains under the windscreen scuttle block with leaves and debris, and the water then finds its way past the bulkhead seals. Once it reaches the wiring and control units under the carpet the faults look far more serious than the cause.
Check: Lift the carpets in both footwells and press down hard with your hand, then smell the cabin. Damp underlay on a dry day tells you the drains have been blocked for a while.
ElectricalcommonDetectable at viewingevidence: documented80180k km
EGR cooler leakEGR cooler€400–€1,000
Coolant loss with no visible external leak, white smoke, sweet smell. The EGR cooler cracks internally and leaks coolant into the intake. BMW recalled affected diesels over a fire risk from glycol deposits igniting.
Check: Check coolant level and look for unexplained top-ups in the service history. Verify the recall was carried out. It's free and searchable by VIN.

Mileage and servicing

What the odometer does and doesn't tell you here, plus the service items whose neglect causes the expensive failures above.

A commuter with high mileage is healthier than a low-mileage town car, since the filter depends on long runs. Ask about the daily journey first.

What that meansNo US band exists to compare. Any car you find there's a private import, parts and specialist knowledge are thinner, and the price says more about import cost than about the market.

US figures are the EU band converted at a stated rate. No US market differential is modelled: we hold no sourced US asking prices, and inventing one would be worse than saying so. What the comparison does show for real is availability. Most of this range was never sold in the US.

Buyer notes

Our judgement, kept separate from the records it's built on.

Our read, not a record
This engine gives a small car genuinely long legs and it's the least stressed unit in the range. It needs journeys that let the filter clear itself, so a car used only for short trips is the wrong buy whatever the price. Check the filter and EGR history and look for a pattern of warning lights. So take the manual, because the dry-clutch DSG is the most expensive thing that can go wrong on this car.

Everything above this line comes from the issue and specification records. This paragraph is our judgement on top of them. See how we reach it.
