Likely spend is the mid cost of every issue rated common or universal, added together, what an unmaintained example owes over the next few years, not a prediction for any one car. Worst case if everything here failed at once is €3,000, which isn't a realistic scenario but is a useful ceiling.

All issues, by system

Turbo & intake

Carbon buildup on intake valvesdirect injection€400–€700
Rough cold idle, slow throttle response, misfires, gradual loss of low-end response. Direct injection puts no fuel over the intake valves, so crankcase vapour deposits bake on undisturbed.
Check: Not visible without a borescope. Treat it as a service item that's due unless there's a receipt. It's not a fault, it's an unbudgeted maintenance cost.

Cooling

Water pump and thermostat housing leakwater pump and thermostat housing€400–€800
Coolant disappearing with no puddle underneath, a crusty residue around the front of the engine, and eventually a low-coolant warning. The water pump and thermostat housing on this engine family are a plastic assembly that weeps as it ages. It's a wear item rather than a defect, and because the pump is driven off the timing belt on the diesels the labour is more than the part suggests.
Check: Look for dried coolant staining around the front of the engine and check the expansion tank level against its marks. Ask whether it has been done, because most cars of this age have either had it or are due.

Transmission

DQ250 wet-clutch DSG mechatronic and service neglectVW group DQ250 six-speed wet-clutch DSG€700–€1,500
Jerky or harsh shifts, clutch flare or judder, an occasional drop to neutral or limp mode, and gearbox fault codes. Mechatronic valve-body and pressure-accumulator faults, aggravated by a missed 60,000 km oil-and-filter service. The wet six-speed is the more durable of the DSGs but not maintenance-free.
Check: Confirm the DSG oil-and-filter history, test-drive for harsh or flaring shifts at low speed and under load, and scan for gearbox faults.

How to read this

Every issue is authored once against the part that actually carries it: the engine, the gearbox, the chassis or a shared component, and inherited by every variant that has that part. The badge next to each issue says where it comes from, so you can tell an CHHB problem from an E9x problem.

Evidence tiers. Manufacturer means a recall, technical bulletin or revised part number. Documented means workshop data or multiple independent sources. Reported means owner consensus with no hard confirmation, and never sets a risk level on its own.
